The Ritual

Storyline

The ritual is a horror film based in Sweden, four friends decide to go hiking there after the untimely death of their friend in a mugging. They choose to do this in a way to honour the friend that passed. Whilst hiking one of the friends hurts his knee, leading the group to decide to try and cut straight through the forest instead of following the trail. During this time they find mysterious cases of gutted animals like elk strung from the high branches of the trees, not long after this they decide to take shelter from heavy rainfall in a cabin they discover.

Whilst exploring the cabin they find a horrific statue made from the mutilated and decapitated corpse of a person with antlers and twigs. When they sleep that night they all seem to have shared nightmares and when they awake they come to find one of the group naked and praying in front of the statue. After deciding staying at the cabin won’t be a good idea the group sets off again, with one of the quartet spotting a large figure in the distance.

Later that night after setting up tents and falling asleep, the group has another nightmare, soon to be woken up by the screams of one of their friends. Leaving their tents the remaining three find their friends tent empty and destroyed. In a state of panic the three get lost in the dark trying to find their missing friend. When it becomes morning and the group tries to find their lost supplies, they end up stumbling across the body of their missing friend gutted and stung up in the trees like the animals they had seen before.

After managing to take down the destroyed body, the trio gives their friend a burial and they move on. Unfortunately not long after another of the group is dragged away by the unseen creature, and when the final two realise this creature has been stalking them, they try to run. As they attempt to run from the creature they start following a path that leads to a forest village, and after entering the nearest house are knocked unconscious.

When the two awake they are tied in the basement and are visited by an old lady. When she leaves she orders for one the two to be taken upstairs. Not long after a younger lady enters and explains to the remaining man that the people are preparing for sacrifice. At some point later on the friend that was taken is returned beaten and bruised and announces that he will be sacrificed to the creature that massacred their friends. He urges his friend to escape and burn the village before he ends up being sacrificed as well.

The final friend manages to escape his restraints as the other is tied for sacrifice. When the creature arrives the man hallucinates it as his wife until he is picked up and strung among the trees. When the younger lady returns, the last of the group asks what the creature could possibly be and she explains that it is a child of loki and her cult provides its sacrifices in order to be immortal.

When yet again this woman leaves, the man escapes the basement and, using a lit torch, sets fire to the village. Attracting the creature. As it kills the young woman, he manages to find a hunting rifle and in his escape has to kill one of the cultists. After doing so he takes the cultists axe. The creature becomes enraged as the man shoots at it to be able to escape. In its pursuit it plagues his mind with hallucinations and ends up offering him a chance at retribution. He refuses as he hits it with the axe, managing to slow it down as he fully escapes the forest.

My opinions

This film is one of my favourite horror movies to this day. Originally I had read the book the film adaptation was based on, this book is still one of my favourites to this day. The suspense and build up during the movie was incredible, making you worried that anything could happen at every turn. This and the lack of any narration, as well as its lack of dialogue before explosive arguments, create a captivating and almost artist piece. Even as a horror film it has a compelling story line and a unique way of propelling its story forward, even in the way it sets up the backstory with the use of the nightmares.

With all of this the design of the creature is equally as impressive, the use of human features to help make it look like an animal, as well as the fact its human appendages are fully functional are honestly horrifying. Being able to get the full look of the hybrid creature instills a terror like no other, as your mind races to come up with solutions to explain how it could possibly come to being.

The design and look of this creature influenced my design quite a bit. Giving me the push to create a gory creature based on horror, to push me a little out of my comfort zone.

3/4/22

For this week I have made my final moodboard for my design and I’ve also picked my chose for my final colour palettes as well. My bibliography has been finalised as I’ve been slowly adding to it as my research nd design has developed over the weeks.

My choice over what to do for the hair has been made as well as I have had to figure out how to both safely attach a headband to hair and how to hide the band within the hair simultaneously.

26/4/22

The techniques I’ve been practising this week has been the blending of latex. For my assessment I have ordered a pair of prosthetics that will need to be blended into the skin. Due to the placement the prosthetics are going to have, the use of scar wax won’t be a good or reliable choice, this being as the prosthetics will be attached in a place of extreme movement and scarwax won’t be able to stick.

On top of this I have started to finalise my faceplans and adapt them as needed for the look to be cohesive and interesting.

19/4/22

To make sure my skills are up to date, I’ve started to practise certain techniques that I know I will be using to complete my look. These techniques at the moment being about and applied to airbrushing. I only plan on practicing these techniques with an airbrush for a short while as I have been consistently using and practising with my airbrush both at home and at college over the past two years.

12/4/22

I started to make a final bibliography as I’ve been researching my design and creature. For my primary research I have started to come up with questions to be put into a survey that I am planning on putting on my social media to allow people to take the survey. Including this, this week I also created an initial faceplan of my design for my final assessment.

5/4/22

This week I made two separate initial mood boards for my research. One is an accumulation of animalistic fantasy creatures whilst the other is an amalgamation of a variety of humanoid fantasy creatures I had found. Doing these mood boards separately I feel has given me a push to start finalizing a concrete idea for my designs.

To accompany these mood boards I also made a few different colour palettes. These I have done to give me an idea of what kind of feel and look my design has. This is as specific colour palettes are used for specific genres, emotions and settings within all media.

29/3/22

I’ve finished my proposal and have created an action plan following the few other entries in this journal that I’ve already done. This action plan will be showing a week to week basis of what I hope to be achieving towards my unit and final assessment.

With all this I have made my proposed bibliography, I did a few quick searches into fantasy and fantasy creatures and picked some interesting websites I think could help me in my research.

22/3/22

I’ve started to work on my project proposal for my unit. Already my review for it is written and I have started to put together my project concept and theme. Most likely I will choose fantasy as my theme, this being as it is a widely broad theme and has many different sub-themes within itself. Picking this as my theme, I feel, will let me have more creative freedom in my thought process for the design as I won’t have to keep myself boxed in to one small specific theme.

15/3/22

This week I completely read over the brief. I familiarized myself with the learning outcomes as well as the submission requirements. Doing this has allowed me to start thinking about my project as a whole and even has let me go over some of the stuff i didn’t quite understand.

Final Faceplan

For this look I’m going to mainly be using my airbrush, this will be to apply the base of the whole look as well as some other small details with a handmade stencil across the body. I’ll be using makeup sponges to apply latex and blend it out as well as to add blood as a final touch. Cotton wool, latex and a metal spatula will be used to add a lip across the middle of the face and to properly blend the edges. Spirit gum and cotton buds will be used to apply prosthetics to the forehead with latex being used to blend the edges into the skin.

Hair Design

For the hair I’ve chosen to do braids like these, only I will be doing three. One larger one down the centre of the hair and slightly smaller ones going down the sides. This will allow me to be able to braid between the antlers of the headband I bought for my look, and be able to braid the band onto the head and hide the band in the hair.

To do this all I’ll need is my headband, a comb and some hair bobbles.

Pearl Harbour

Often visited by US Naval fleets on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, sat Pearl Harbour. Just over 3500 nautical miles and 4070 miles from Japan, Pearl Harbour was one of many on a list of possible places that could be attacked.

December 7th 1941, Japan attacked. Sending bombers in a surprise attack on both the US naval and military forces present in Pearl Harbour. The loss of nearly 200 planes, 3 light cruisers, 8 battleships and 3435 casualties a significant amount more then the Japanese’s loss of 5 midget submarines, 29 planes and just under 100 casualties. Just one day after the attack the president at the time, President Roosevelt, went before congress to ask for an official declaration of war against Japan.

Four years after the fatal attack, congress initiated an official investigation of the Pearl Harbour attack. A full and thorough investigation was performed, using known facts and circumstance, it was sought to find out whether any failures and lack of preparation from the US added to the disaster. As well as to identify any possible changes that could be put in place to stop any future attacks.

Final Look and Evaluation

Strengths

I applied the antler prosthetics well and blended the edges well with the latex. The braiding over the headband to both anchor it to the head and to help hide the band looked good, and managed to hide the band really well. My application of pigments with the airbrush was even and opaque, and my use of the homemade stencil gave the fur texture I wanted.

Weaknesses

My blending of cotton for the lip across the face wasn’t well done around the nose and kept lifting off the skin. The airbrushing around the hairline wasn’t soft and had a harsh line.

Redo’s

If I were to do this again I would make sure to soften the the edges of the airbrushing around the hairline. I would also make time to properly attach the cotton around the nose so there would be no lifting. I’d use the stencil to create more fur texturing around the body.

Power

There are three main definitions for power.

  1. the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way
  2. the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events
  3. physical strength and force exerted by something or someone

For me power is taking control of yourself, your life, your dreams and choosing to do whatever you what with them. Most people nowadays have been trained to follow worldly expectations, follow the trends and the beauty standards. Some are even to scared to act, wear or express themselves in the ways that they want, this being as they’re too scared of everyone else’s opinions and thoughts and reactions.

My Model for this assessment (my sister) has an array of tattoos and is planning on getting more. These tattoos have helped her over come insecurities, they have allowed her to express herself through art and they have even helped in ways to control her anxiety. Being an aspiring tattoo artist herself she has learnt the history and practises behind tattooing as an art form and a form of expression. For my assessment I chose to extend her tattoos in the style of pop art and black out tattooing, finding tattoo designs her tattoo artist had done and slightly changing the look of them too more fit the theme of tattoos my model already had.

Doing this look let my model see the full extent of how she would look with her planned tattoos, as well as give her the peace of being able to see her body art complete before going through the process.

Heavily tattooed women in todays society whilst not unheard of can still be highly looked down on. The fact my model and many other woman have the power to be able to express themselves, the power to be able to sit for hours sometimes in pain for the freedom of their chosen art and the power to present themselves the way they wish too whilst mostly being looked down on for what they choose to do to their own bodies, inspires me. It shows that non-conformity to societies norms isn’t something to judge or be ashamed of, it shows children that you can be yourself and not be scared of what other people may think.

Power in my eyes is the ability to unapologetically be yourself in the most artistic and creative ways and being able to stay yourself under the scrutinisation of the world and its expectations.
